CPG ERP software: 4 options for consumer brands

Decide whether to replace accounting or keep it while improving purchasing, co-manufacturing, inventory, and channel operations.

Your co-manufacturer confirms a delivery while a retailer sends an order for the same product in a different case pack. You need to know which stock is available, who owns the receipt, and how the order reaches accounting. A CPG ERP shortlist can include NetSuite and Acumatica when finance and operations are moving together. Cin7 Core and Doss are also candidates when the job centers on inventory and operations while retaining an existing accounting system.

These four options have different scopes. This comparison uses official documentation checked October 14, 2026, rather than hands-on testing or a ranked score. Permute publishes it and sells connected business data and custom applications. Its reporting and application role appears separately below.

A full replacement may not be worth the disruption when your current accounting and inventory controls work and the gap is a channel report. Give shortlisted vendors the same users, companies, warehouses, order volumes, and integrations for a twelve-month quote. Separate implementation and opening-data work from recurring licenses so an operations-only proposal is not mistaken for a cheaper version of a full ERP replacement.

For a replacement spanning several companies, the Odoo vs NetSuite comparison checks company access, partial receipts, and the same ten-user purchasing scope.

Decide which records and responsibilities will move

Write down whether your general ledger, or GL, is staying. It holds the accounting entries used to produce financial statements. An operations system can manage detailed receipts and shipments while sending entries to that ledger; a broader ERP implementation may replace both. The choice changes migration work, accounting review, and who investigates a failed handoff.

For outsourced production, identify the owner of materials at each stage and the evidence that establishes a completed batch. A co-manufacturer’s production confirmation, a warehouse receipt, and a supplier invoice describe different events. Agree which event makes stock available and which documents your finance team requires. Do not let a demo silently choose those policies.

  • Production: can a partial co-manufacturer delivery retain the outstanding order quantity and the supplied lot references?
  • Packaging: can the same product be sold as individual units and retailer cases without merging unlike pack sizes?
  • Availability: does held or already allocated stock stay out of the quantity offered to another channel?
  • Accounting: can finance trace a posted entry back to its receipt or shipment and investigate a rejected posting?
  • Partner access: can a warehouse or co-manufacturer supply its records without viewing another partner’s commercial details?

Use the same sample records and acceptance criteria with every vendor. Planning adds another decision: replenishment needs agreed lead times and demand inputs beyond a stock balance. The inventory planning article covers that preparation without assuming a particular ERP.

When the buying decision includes replenishment, agree on when material becomes usable after arrival. The lead-time calculation article separates supplier delivery from receiving and inspection so a promised receipt is not mistaken for stock ready for production.

Four systems to evaluate against that scope

AcumaticaERP with manufacturing, distribution, and commerce applicationsA brand evaluating production and distribution togetherCore versus partner applications and implementation ownership
Cin7 CoreInventory and operations software with accounting integrationsInventory-led change alongside existing accountingManufacturing edition, integration allowances, and posting behavior
DossOperations software that retains the existing GLConsumer-brand inventory, purchasing, and order workflowsModule scope, partner feeds, and financial handoff

NetSuite for a broader ERP decision

NetSuite’s ERP overview describes accounting, order processing, inventory, production, and warehouse operations in one suite. Its inventory management page documents forward and backward lot and serial tracing. That scope makes it a candidate when replacing finance software is part of the project.

Ask the implementation team to show the proposed modules using your co-manufacturer receipt and retailer order. Confirm how the required channel and warehouse connections will be delivered, including who supports failures. A product family’s breadth does not establish what is included in your contract. Keep the accounting migration, opening balances, and stock-record migration as explicit work items.

Acumatica for manufacturing and distribution requirements

Acumatica’s CPG page describes manufacturing, distribution, commerce, and accounting capabilities. It names case and each picking, warehouse transfers, and production traceability. The page also lists partner applications, including process manufacturing and quality tools, so ask which parts of your proposed workflow use core functionality and which require another application.

This is a candidate when production requirements belong in the same evaluation as order fulfillment. Have the delivery team demonstrate your actual process, whether it uses a discrete bill of materials or a formula. Record who configures and supports every extension. If a correction crosses an extension boundary, the responsible team should be named before the implementation starts.

Cin7 Core for an inventory-led implementation

Cin7’s getting-started documentation describes using Core as a standalone inventory system or connecting an existing Xero or QuickBooks Online account. Cin7’s FAQ says Core supports partial and full outsourced manufacturing. Evaluate that documented scope when keeping your accounting system is a requirement.

Confirm which production features and integrations your subscription includes. Cin7 lists advanced manufacturing as an add-on, so a general manufacturing claim is not enough to price the implementation. Test a receipt correction after the accounting handoff and inspect both systems. Include the person who will reconcile those records in the demonstration.

Doss for operations alongside the existing ledger

Doss describes its product as operations software for inventory, purchasing, orders, and operational finance that posts to an existing GL. Its inventory module describes lot and expiration tracking, quality holds, transfers, and channel allocation. Those are documented capabilities to test against the brand’s partner and warehouse records.

Doss’s finance module describes an operational subledger and accounting-system postings. Ask which records stay in each system and what happens when a posting is rejected or corrected. Treat the implementation as a change to operational ownership, even when the GL stays. Confirm the precise accounting edition and partner feeds in scope rather than assuming a listed integration covers every workflow.

Use a co-manufacturer receipt as the acceptance test

Consider a hypothetical brand receiving 100 cases from a co-manufacturer, with twelve units per case. A retailer order needs 40 cases, and the direct-to-consumer store has orders for 120 individual units. Before other commitments or holds, those orders represent 600 units against a receipt of 1,200. The sample leaves 600 units available, assuming all received units have been released and are available for those channels.

Now place ten of the unallocated received cases on quality hold. The available remainder becomes 480 units under the same assumptions. Ask the vendor to show the held stock, the channel commitments, and the original receipt without counting the retailer order twice. Keep the co-manufacturer’s lot reference and the warehouse receipt ID connected. The lot traceability article explains why a matching stock total does not establish that history.

Add a second retailer selling a six-unit case under another item code. Someone must approve the relationship between that code, the pack size, and the internal SKU before quantities are combined. For commercial reporting, agree which costs belong to each channel before comparing its margin. A successful quantity conversion alone does not establish a margin calculation.

Where Permute fits across product and channel records

Permute sells connected business data and custom applications. We can scope work that combines supported sources and supplied partner records when internal SKUs, retailer item codes, and pack references disagree. The work includes declared mappings and review of ambiguous matches, with original source IDs retained.

Your operations owners define which product and pack references belong together and which source owns a quantity or status. Those rules can support recurring reports or custom applications with source evidence and access controls. An operations manager can review an unmatched retailer item before including it in a channel total, rather than accepting a match based on a similar description.

Preserve product and pack identity across channels
Partner SKU, pack, and source ID
Approved product and unit mapping
Channel report with evidence
Retained source references let a reviewer check a conversion before relying on the combined quantity.

Inspect the records behind a channel report

Start with an available source and review the SKU and pack references your combined report would need.

Separate reporting scope from execution and accounting

Permute is a separate commercial option, not a full ERP replacement in this comparison. We are not a forecasting engine or a warehouse execution system, and we do not choose professional accounting treatments. This example does not promise native Doss or Cin7 connections, automatic order fulfillment, or stock updates. Confirm extraction and any proposed action as part of the specific scope.

Choose the scope your team can own

A CPG ERP decision starts with whether accounting moves and which operational records need a new owner. NetSuite and Acumatica belong on a broader ERP shortlist; Cin7 Core and Doss also deserve evaluation when retaining accounting. Use the co-manufacturer delivery and retailer order to test units, holds, commitments, and evidence. Choose after the responsible people can explain both the resulting balance and the handoffs they will maintain.

Review the data work around your software decision

Bring one product, its partner records, and a report the proposed system needs to support.

Questions about choosing software for a consumer brand

Do I need manufacturing software if a co-manufacturer makes everything?

Base the scope on the records and responsibilities you retain. You may need visibility into materials, production status, and finished-goods receipts without operating a factory floor. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the outsourced workflow your team owns.

Should the whole transaction history move into the new system?

Agree which history must remain searchable and which open records must be active at cutover. Keep source references and a way to retrieve archived evidence. The migration decision should include the people who investigate returns, inventory differences, and accounting questions.

Can the warehouse keep its own software?

Include that requirement in the proposal and identify which system owns each stock status. Test the actual feed, correction handling, and delay between a warehouse event and the brand’s view. A connection should preserve the references needed to investigate a difference.

How should I compare implementation quotes?

Give each vendor the same workflow and acceptance test, then request the modules, partner applications, connections, migration, and support as separate scope items. Include the time your own staff must spend on mapping and validation. Compare those commitments before comparing the subscription totals.
