Your store shows the jacket as available, but the warehouse has the wrong size. A returned medium is sitting at the second location while the channel listing shows stock for the whole style. Apparel inventory management software needs to keep the sellable variant, its location, and its condition separate all the way through the transaction.
Evaluate Cin7 Core when inventory and sales-channel workflows are the main purchase, Zoho Inventory when its plan limits fit a smaller operation, and ERPNext when you want to configure inventory inside a broader ERP and can own the implementation. Keep an existing system that handles the required variants and returns correctly. These recommendations use official documentation checked October 16, 2026, not hands-on product scores.
Start with the sellable variant
A style total cannot answer whether a navy medium is available to ship. Give each size-and-color combination a stable stock-keeping unit, or SKU, and preserve the mapping to each sales channel’s identifier. Decide which location can fulfill each channel and when a returned garment becomes sellable again.
- Does an order for navy medium reduce that variant without changing navy large?
- Can the team receive a return at a different location from the original shipment?
- Can a garment awaiting inspection remain out of the quantity offered for sale?
- Can someone trace a channel stock update to the variant and location records that produced it?
Inventory software and a full ERP can cover different amounts of the business. The CPG ERP software comparison covers the wider finance and operations choice. Keep this evaluation focused on variant-level stock and the return that moves between locations.
Compare the same inventory records
| Requirement | Cin7 Core | Zoho Inventory | ERPNext |
|---|---|---|---|
| Size and color | Product families support product variants such as size and color. | Item groups organize items by attributes including size and color. | Item templates and variants distinguish the product family from the variant used in a transaction. |
| Stock by location | Locations represent warehouses, shops, and other stock locations. | Warehouse operations show stock distribution and support transfers. | Warehouse records can represent storage locations in a hierarchy. |
| Returned stock | Credit notes and restocking can be processed independently. | Sales returns distinguish the return request from warehouse receipt. | Sales returns use a return Delivery Note, Sales Invoice, or both, depending on the original transaction. |
All three document variants, locations, and returns. That does not establish that your storefront will receive the right availability quantity without configuration. Ask how each channel connection maps variants, selects locations, handles failed updates, and excludes stock that is waiting for inspection.
Follow a navy medium jacket through a sale and return
Use this hypothetical starting position for SKU JACKET-NAVY-M: ten sellable units at the warehouse and three at the store. Navy large is a different SKU and is outside this calculation. Ship two mediums from the warehouse to an online customer. Warehouse stock becomes eight, store stock remains three, and total sellable stock is eleven.
The customer returns one medium to the store. Physical stock is now twelve, but sellable stock remains eleven until inspection accepts the garment. After acceptance, the store has four sellable units and the warehouse still has eight. If the online channel draws only from the warehouse, its eligible stock remains eight even though the business has twelve sellable units in total. Assume no other orders, reservations, or movements.
Have each vendor reproduce those numbers and show the records behind them. This is a proposed acceptance test, not a claim that the default settings produce the result. If the product needs a separate hold location or another configuration, record that requirement and its effect on plan limits.
What to configure in each product
Cin7 Core: product families and return disposition
Create the jacket family and its variant SKUs, then configure warehouse and store locations. Cin7’s credit and restock documentation separates the financial credit from restocking. Use that distinction to demonstrate when the returned medium enters stock and which location receives it. Verify the inspection and channel-availability configuration before accepting the result.
This is a candidate when you need inventory alongside channel operations. Confirm the exact integrations and warehouse functions in the proposal. Multiple inventory locations do not imply that every warehouse mobile workflow is included at every location.
Zoho Inventory: item groups and warehouse receipt
Create the jacket item group with size and color attributes, then enter quantities against the individual items and locations. Zoho’s return workflow increases physical stock when the return is received at the warehouse. Demonstrate how the inspected and uninspected quantities affect the channel, rather than assuming a received return is ready for resale.
Zoho is worth evaluating when the order, user, and location allowances fit. Check whether your hold-stock design needs another location or a feature outside the chosen plan. That decision can change the initial subscription calculation.
ERPNext: variant items and explicit warehouse records
Create an item template and individual variants, then configure the warehouse and store. ERPNext’s sales return instructions let you create a return against the original transaction and review the return warehouse. Process the example and inspect the stock records for the medium; do not use a manual total adjustment as a substitute for testing the return path.
ERPNext suits a team prepared to own configuration, hosting, and channel integration work. It is a broader implementation choice than buying a variant tracker. The ERP inventory management comparison helps frame the additional operational scope.
Price the same operating workload
Use three internal users, 300 orders every month, two stock locations, and one ecommerce connection for a US business. Compare twelve months in USD before tax. The baseline excludes advanced mobile warehouse workflows and extra channel connections; price any inspection configuration needed to pass the return test separately.
Zoho Inventory’s US Standard plan lists $29 per organization per month billed annually, including three users, 500 monthly orders, and two locations. The base subscription is $348 for the year. That covers the stated quantity limits, but does not prove that every required channel or inspection feature is included.
Cin7 Core Standard lists $349 per month for new customers, five users, two ecommerce and app integrations, 6,000 annual sales orders, and unlimited inventory locations. Twelve months at that rate is $4,188 before tax, an annualized base amount rather than a confirmed annual-billing offer. The page distinguishes unlimited locations from Standard WMS coverage of one warehouse; confirm onboarding, add-ons, and contractual terms.
ERPNext has no software license charge, while hosting and implementation are separate. A small hosting entry price does not establish capacity or support for this workload. Its complete annual cost remains unknown until deployment, integration, backup, and support responsibilities are scoped. Compare all three after adding the work required to pass the same test.
Where Permute fits across channel records
Permute is the connected-data and custom-app software we sell. We help bring supported business sources into reports and applications with source references and access controls. For apparel reporting, the work starts with declared mappings between a channel’s variant identifier, the inventory SKU, and the relevant location.
An operations manager could inspect a configured exception report showing where channel and inventory records disagree, using the same definition of sellable stock. Keep unmapped sizes or uncertain return status visible for review. A style total should not hide a missing mapping for the medium that the customer ordered.
What the inventory system still owns
Permute does not replace garment inspection, receiving, picking, or the inventory transaction workflow. We are not a forecasting engine. Confirm supported source fields, refresh timing, and integration scope before relying on a cross-system report; it does not establish that a storefront has received a stock update.
Inspect a sample of your variant records
Start with permitted SKU and channel exports to see which identifiers and status fields are available.
Reconcile sizes before moving opening stock
Preserve SKU, barcode, style, size, color, location, and channel identifiers in the migration mapping. Keep open orders and returns separate from opening stock so importing them does not count the same units twice. Sample physical quantities with a cycle-counting process before accepting the opening balances.
Reconnect channels in a controlled pilot and choose which system sends availability. Test the sale, cross-location return, inspection, and a failed update before moving every SKU. Keep the prior transaction archive accessible until the new stock and return records have been reconciled.
Choose apparel inventory software that can explain the available quantity for one exact size, color, and location. Cin7 Core, Zoho Inventory, and ERPNext all merit evaluation, but their configuration and ownership requirements differ. Use the same return example and operating workload to compare them. If your current system passes, fixing its item mappings may be enough.
Review your channel-to-inventory mapping
Bring a variant export and a recent return to scope the data handoffs your reporting needs.
Questions apparel teams ask about inventory software
Is one SKU per style enough?
Use separate identifiers for combinations that must be stocked and fulfilled independently. A navy medium and navy large cannot share a usable availability total when the customer has ordered one size. The style can still group those variants for analysis.
Should a return become available as soon as it arrives?
Follow the brand’s inspection policy before making it sellable. Receipt establishes physical possession, while acceptance establishes eligibility for resale in the worked example. Confirm that channel updates respect that distinction.
Does stock at the store have to appear online?
That depends on which locations are allowed to fulfill online orders. The example excludes store stock from the online quantity, even after the returned garment is accepted. Configure and test that rule rather than publishing the company-wide total by default.
Is ERPNext free to operate?
The software license has no charge, but hosting, configuration, maintenance, and support still need owners and a budget. Channel connections and the return workflow also need testing. Compare the complete operating scope rather than treating the license price as the annual total.
