Double shows the Client Secret once. A Super Admin must generate the key.
Before you start
- A Client ID and Client Secret from a Double API key.
1. Open Double practice settings
Open Double → Practice Settings → General.
Double limits API key creation to Super Admins. In Practice Settings → Practice Management → General, select Generate API Key. The key gives a Client ID and Client Secret; Permute needs both.
If the action is missing, check the Double role of the person preparing the connection. A regular user cannot create the key on behalf of the practice.
2. Generate and copy the API key
Select Generate API Key and copy the Client ID and Client Secret.
Double displays the Client Secret once when the key is generated. Copy it with the Client ID before closing that screen, then paste both in Permute. The Client ID identifies the key; the secret authenticates it.
If a copied value fails, check that the ID and secret came from the same generated key. Keep the secret in a secure location and replace a compromised key.
3. Add Double in Permute
In your workspace, open Connectors, select Add Connector, choose Double, and name the account.
Under Sync which data?, choose an option:
| Choice | What it does |
|---|---|
| Everything | Selects all discovered data available to this connection. |
| Select manually | Choose the tables Permute syncs. |
Connection details
| Field or access | What to use |
|---|---|
| Client ID | Copy from the key generated in Practice Settings → General. |
| Client Secret | Copy from the same key when Double shows it. |
- Enter the Client ID and Client Secret in Permute, then select Connect.
4. Choose tables (manual selection)
If you chose Select manually, open the connector after connecting. Use the checkboxes to select at least one table, then select Save selection.
5. Check the first result
- Choose a known client in Double and note a linked contact.
- Compare those two records separately; a contact can belong to several clients.
Available data
| Data group | What the setup screen covers |
|---|---|
| Clients and contacts | Business clients and the people linked to them. |
| Practice work | Emails, activity, and close data named on the setup screen. |
Separate clients and contacts
Double uses client records for the businesses a practice serves and contact records for people at those businesses. A contact can be linked to more than one client. A client name and a contact name therefore identify different things.
When checking the clients and contacts named on the Permute setup screen, find the client first, then the related contact. If one person appears under two clients, check the links in Double before treating the second appearance as a duplicate sync.
Understand email history
Double can keep email history for messages sent from Double to client contacts. Where a contact is linked to several clients, the same email may be visible in more than one client context. Compare the message and contact before counting such entries as separate conversations.
The Permute setup screen lists emails and activity among the data groups. When investigating an absent email, first check whether it exists in Double’s email history for the expected contact and client.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Generate API Key is missing | Ask a Double Super Admin to create the key pair. |
| The connection is rejected | Check that Client ID and Client Secret came from the same key. |
